Whatever you are trying to do when you manage your emails inside your Windows Live Hotmail account, you always work either on the email message currently selected, or on a group of emails. As this implies, Hotmail allows you to select more than one message at any given time. This trick comes in especially handy when you are trying to move multiple emails at the same time, or delete several messages at once (among other examples). This tutorial explains how to select several emails at once in your Hotmail inbox or other standard or custom email folder.
Whenever you click on an email message inside your Hotmail inbox or another email folder, you are automatically selecting that particular email, and Hotmail shows it with a different background color: (which is how you can at a glance determine which message is the current one, as you can see from the screenshot below).
Notice from the screenshot above that each email message has a checkbox on its left side: since an email is automatically selected when you click on it, the checkbox serves no purpose for a single message selection. But it is what allows you to select multiple email messages at the same time!
Hotmail Tip: the background color of the email currently selected depends on your Hotmail Theme; but for all themes, a selected message will have a different color than the other ones alongside it (a later tutorial will explain in details how to change Hotmail theme, which is actually quite simple).
To select multiple emails (whether they are listed consecutively or not), simply click on each message's checkbox, as shown below:
And once you have selected all the email messages you wanted to include, simply perform the action in question (moving these emails to another folder, deleting them, etc.) Windows Live Hotmail.com works exactly the same way whether one or more messages are selected at any given point. Obvious exceptions include the Reply command, for example - since you cannot reply to multiple emails at the same time!
Hotmail Tip: to select all emails visible in the current folder, you can also use the "Select All" checkbox, which is displayed above the listing of messages:
