When you first sign up to create a Hotmail account, you will automatically have the standard five email folders created for you, and visible on the left of any email screen: these include the Inbox, where all messages arrive by default, the Junk folder, where Hotmail moves messages it thinks are spam, the Drafts folder to save emails you write, the Sent folder, where a copy of all email messages you send is kept (until and unless you turn off that functionality, something we'll explain how to do in a later tutorial), and finally the Deleted folder, where emails you delete are placed temporarily (to give you a second and last chance to recover them).
But as soon as you start creating folders and adding subfolders, you will have many more places in which to find emails - in this tutorial, we will show you how to open an email folder in your Hotmail account.
As mentioned earlier, Hotmail will display all y email folders on the left hand side of the screen. If you do not see all your folders appear, see how you can show all hidden folders in Hotmail. Once all your email folders are visible on the left, click on the name of one of them, as shown below:
As soon as you do, several things will happen: first, Windows Live Hotmail will open the folder you selected: this means that you will now see a different listing of email messages, namely the ones that are contained inside the folder you just clicked on.
Second, Hotmail will highlight the current folder in a different color: the actual background color used for the open folder will depend on the theme you are currently using (a topic we'll cover in depth in later tutorials). This background highlighting of the current folder allows you to, at a glance, quickly tell in which folder you are (what folder is currently open, in other words).
Another way to determine which folder is open is to look near the top of the screen, below the toolbar: in the case of the screenshot below, we have opened our "Junk" folder, where perceived spam is automatically moved by Hotmail.
As you can tell from above, not only is the current folder highlighted on the left, but its name / title is also showing in large letters just under the email toolbar.
In some cases, Windows Live Hotmail will automatically reload the last folder you opened, which may not be the one you wanted to see. To go back to your Hotmail inbox, for example, just click on the word "Inbox" just like this:
And this is all there is to opening email folders in Windows Live Hotmail!
