Since the summer of 2010, Windows Live Hotmail has changed quite a few things, one of which is the "Manage Folders" functionality, which allows you to get the size and number of emails inside folders, delete folders, rename folders, and empty folders (the Junk folder and the Deleted folder). In this tutorial, we will show you how to access the Manage Folders screen in Hotmail, in just a few clicks.
First, go through Hotmail Sign in until you are logged into your email account; once in, go to your emails (depending on your email account settings, you may be looking at the Windows Live Home screen). As soon as you are inside any of your email folders, you will see a listing of links on the left of the screen:
Now, move your mouse pointer (cursor) above the "Folders" label / link inside the left pane, and a "gear" button will appear (as shown on the screenshot below). Click on the gear icon, and choose "Manage folders" from the menu that opens:
As soon as you do, Windows Live Hotmail will redirect you to another screen of your email account, which contains a full listing of your email folders: you will find the five standard folders (inbox, junk, drafts, sent, and deleted), as well as any custom email folder you have created yourself. The following Hotmail tutorials will delve in depth into the functionality this screen offers, but this is how you access the Manage Folders screen in the new Windows Live Hotmail!
Hotmail Tip: note that this "Manage Folders" screen reflects the state of your email account at the moment you loaded it - it is not updated in real time to show any new email messages that may have since arrived in your inbox (or other folders, if you have setup email filters, or rules). In most cases, though, this does not matter, as you are using this screen to get a good "overview" of your Hotmail account, not a real time update on emails and folder sizes as messages arrive.
